Founding story

In 2001 Serguei Beloussov, Max Tsyplyaev, Stanislav Protassov, and Ilya Zubarev founded Acronis as a distinct business unit within SWsoft. Its core focus was developing boot loader and disk partitioning software. In 2003 it was spun off as a separate firm that focused on developing disaster recovery and backup software based on disk imaging technology.

The following decade saw a number of milestones. In 2012 Acronis purchased GroupLogic, enabling it to incorporate mobile devicesi nto enterprise environments. In 2013 it revealed the opening of an official research and development division called Acronis Labs. Acronis now sells both on-premises and cloud software products. It maintains offices in numerous major cities worldwide.

Acronis’ main resources are its human resources, who include the engineers that design and develop its products, the sales employees that sell them, and the customer service employees that provide support.

It maintains important physical resources in the form of research and development centers in the United States, Russia, and Singapore, and cloud data centers in the U.S., Germany, France, Russia, Japan, and Singapore. It places a high priority on intellectual property, with over 100 patents. Lastly, it has relied on funding from outside parties, raising $11 million from three investors as of January 2004.

Acronis has a cost-driven structure, aiming to minimize expenses through significant automation. Its biggest cost driver is likely sales/marketing, a fixed cost. Other major drivers are in the areas of customer support/operations and administration, both fixed costs.
