Careers at Architizer
Mission
To redefine the architecture industry by creating the world’s largest archive of architecture online in order to help architects design better buildings in the future.
History
Architizer was conceived by two architects – Marc Kushner from the US and Matthias Hollwich from Germany. Both are architects who have years of experience and their separate careers and lives culminated into this grand project.
Marc Kushner graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Design with a Master’s degree in Architecture. He worked at several architecture firm, such as Steven Holl, Jürgen Mayer H., and Lewis Tsurumaki Lewis. Matthias Hollwich worked for a number of international acclaimed architectural firms, including Rem Hoolhaas’ Office of Metropolitan Architecture, Eisenman Architects, and Diller+Scofidio.
After meeting Kuschner in Jürgen Mayer’s Berlin kitchen, Hollwich decided to start an architecture firm with him and named it HWKN. This company started its operations in 2007. During the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Hollwich and Kuschner decided to create Architizer, a digital platform that would help architects and designers promote their work and share ideas with one another.
Architizer launched on November 2, 2009 and it rapidly grew to become the largest platform for architecture online, with more than 40,000 architecture firms uploading over 120,000 buildings at an average value of $33 million. To expand and widen the visibility of global architecture, the two decided to create the Architizer A+ Awards in 2013. They have become the largest global architecture awards program.
In February 2014, the company has received $2 million in seed funding. In September that same year, they secured $1.51 million in venture capital funding. In January 2016, Architizer received further $7 million in venture capital funding.
