Mission

Birchbox is a beauty-focused e-commerce platform and online site. Its mission is to simplify shopping for beauty products and to “help customers find products they love.”

Service

Birchbox’s signature product is a curated box that comes with five high-end beauty, hair, and lifestyle product samples. Selections are personalized for each customer, and a different box of samples is mailed directly to subscribers’ homes every month. At first focused exclusively on female consumers, the company has since expanded and now also offers a “Birchbox Man” subscription, as well as products targeting male customers.

Full-size products are available on the “Birchbox Shop” portion of the site. For women’s products, the categories include makeup, hair, fragrance, bath and body, nails, and lifestyle accessories. For men, the categories include hair, skincare, beard, shave, body, fragrance, oral care, and apparel and accessories. The Birchbox e-commerce site offers tips, reviews, and tutorials related to the products the company sells. Customers can earn redeemable points, and gift subscriptions can also be purchased.

Birchbox is also available in the UK, France, and Spain.

History

Birchbox was founded in 2010 by Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna, two friends and classmates at Harvard Business School. They started the company to address a fundamental problem they believed existed in the market for beauty products, particularly sold online. According to them, shopping for beauty products virtually could be overwhelming, and there was no effective way to try products before purchasing them.

The company is headquartered in New York City, and has a presence in Europe, including in France, Spain, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. In 2012, it acquired French company JolieBox. That year, Birchbox also launched Birchbox Man, which targets male customers.

In 2014, Birchbox opened a flagship physical store located in the SoHo neighborhood in New York City. According to CrunchBase, the company has raised $86.9 million in four funding rounds.
