History

When you have skin in the game, you tend to put your best effort in. This axiom is true in life and business. This is how Hiten Patel, the CEO of Collabera, would describe much of the company’s early success. Collabera, which was then known as Global Consultants Inc., had been around for six years when Patel decided to buy it in 1997 for $2 million. Patel approached friends and family for loans and dipped into all of his life savings to buy the company. There was no way he was going to take the easy way after investing down to the last dollar.

Operating out of an office in Morristown, New Jersey, the company to sought to position itself as a leader in the information technology staffing and solutions arena. The company caught the outsourcing boom in the early 2000s to become one of the dominant players in IT outsourcing. One of the largest minority-owned IT firms in the United States, the company found it easy to expand to markets such as India and the Philippines. The company’s Asia-Pacific headquarters was established in Bangalore, India in the early 2000s.

Under its old name, Collabera went through a number of acquisitions in its early years. IVL India, an IT services firm, was acquired by Collabera in 2007. In the same year, the company also acquired Planet Asia and Blue Hammock. The company received its first round of venture capital funding in 2006, when Oak Investment Partners raised $30 million.

In 2015, Collabera was named as the Best Staffing Firm to Work For by Staffing Industry Analysts. The same year, Patel was conferred the Minority Business-Enterprise (MBE) Catalyst Award by the National Minority Supplier Diversity Council (NMSDC). Today, Collabera has over 12,000 employees, working out of more than 40 offices worldwide. The company has offices in Singapore, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Philippines and Ireland.
