History

Dow AgroSciences was founded in 1952 as the agricultural chemicals department of The Dow Chemical. The Dow Chemical was established by Herbert H. Dow in 1897 in Michigan to study the chemical effects of products on fungi and insects.

In 1954, Eli Lilly and Company formed Agricultural and Industrial Sales Division which focused on plant and animal science. This division was renamed and reorganized in 1960 as Elanco Products Company.

In 1989, a joint venture between The Dow Chemical and Elanco Plant Sciences led to the formation of DowElanco, the world’s sixth largest research-based agricultural company. In 1997, The Dow Chemical purchased the 40% ownership of Eli Lilly in the joint venture; thus acquiring 100% ownership of DowElanco and renaming it Dow AgroSciences LLC.

Dow AgroSciences very soon carved a name for itself in agricultural industry. Near the end of 20th century, it presented its revolutionary product for insect control called Tracer Naturalyte Insect Control (spinosad). For this product, the United States Environmental Protection Agency honored Dow AgroSciences with the U.S. Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 1999. The company received the same award in 2000 for Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System and in 2008 for Delegate and Radiant insecticides.

Today, Dow AgroSciences specializes in biotechnology and seeds solutions along with agricultural chemicals. The company now has more than 9,000 people employed all around the world, and their 2015 global sales were $6.4 billion.
