- Advanced Materials (AM) – Produces and markets polymers, films, and plastics with performance properties for value-added end uses in transportation, consumables, building and construction, durable goods, and health and wellness products. Key offerings are cellulose esters, polyesters, polyvinyl butyral films, and polyester films. The segment accounted for 25% of total sales in 2015.
- Fibers – Manufactures and sells Estron acetate tow and Estrobond triacetin plasticizers for use primarily in the manufacture of cigarette filters; Estron natural (undyed) and Chromspun solution-dyed acetate yarns for use in apparel, home furnishings, and industrial fabrics; and cellulose acetate flake and acetyl raw materials for other acetate fiber producers. Accounted for 13% of sales in 2015.
- Specialty Fluids & Intermediates (SFI) – Leverages large scale and vertical integration from the acetyl, olefins, and alkylamine streams and proprietary manufacturing technology for specialty fluids to manufacture diversified products that are sold externally for use in markets such as industrial chemicals and processing, building and construction, health and wellness, and agrochemicals. The segment accounted for 25% of total sales in 2015.
After World War I ended, there was a scarcity of raw materials such as optical glass, photographic paper, gelatin, and chemicals in the U.S. George Eastman, founder of imaging supplies firm Eastman Kodak, wanted to establish an independent source of chemicals for his operations. So he searched the forests of Kingston, Tennessee for materials, and in 1920 he launched Tennessee Eastman.
Tennessee Eastman had two major platforms, acetyls and organic chemicals, which were used to create products such as sodium acetate, calcium acetate, acetic acid, and acetic anhydride. The company played an important role in producing explosives for World War II. In the ensuing decades, it greatly diversified its portfolio, manufacturing products for use in all aspects of everyday life.
In 1983 Eastman opened the first commercial coal gasification facility in the U.S., used to produce chemicals from syngas instead of the usual petroleum. The next decade saw significant growth in its geographic reach and revenues. In 1994 Tennessee Eastman was spun off from Eastman Kodak as Eastman Chemical Company, an independent firm. It began trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
