History

Ensign Group was formed in 1999 with the goal of establishing a new level of quality care within the skilled nursing industry. The name “Ensign” is synonymous with a flag or a standard, and refers to our goal of setting the standard by which all others are measured. The company believes that through hard work and leadership, they can cultivate a new level of patient care and professional competence at our facilities, and set a new industry standard for quality skilled nursing and rehabilitative care services.

Ensign Group has an established track record of successful acquisitions. Many of their earliest acquisitions were completed a time when the skilled nursing industry was undergoing a major restructuring. From 2001 to 2003, the company acquired a number of underperforming facilities, as several long term care providers disposed of troubled facilities from their portfolios. The firm then applied their core operating expertise to turn those facilities around, both clinically and financially.

In 2004 and 2005, the organization concentrated their efforts on the integration and improvement of their existing operations while limiting their acquisitions to strategically situated properties, acquiring five more facilities in that time period.

The company organized their facilities into five portfolio companies in 2006 and introduced a sixth portfolio company in 2008. This enabled them to attract additional qualified leadership talent, and to identify acquire, and improve facilities at a generally faster rate. With the introduction of the New Market CEO program in early 2006, their acquisition activities rapidly grew, allowing them to add a further 15 facilities between 1 January 2006 and 31 July 2007.

Ensign Group then effectively suspended their acquisition program while they set up their initial public offering that was completed in November 2007. In 2008, the organization acquired two more facilities, adding 219 licensed or 199 operational beds to their operations.
