History

Goss International is one of the world’s largest press and finishing systems manufacturers. A pioneer in Web Offset Press Systems, Goss has a presence in North America, Europe and Asia. With manufacturing plants in China, regional support centers in Europe and product design centers in North America, Goss’ size belies its humble origins in Chicago.

The original Goss Printing Press Company was founded in 1885 by brothers Frederick and Samuel Goss. With a $100,000 loan from family friend Jacob Walser, the pair launched the company and started designing new printing systems.

One of the first printing press systems the brothers designed was a two-colour press called the “Clipper”. This new system allowed for printing on both sides of the paper simultaneously. Over its history, Goss has expanded and acquired a large number of other companies. Companies such as Foster, Cottrell and Sheridan have been acquired by Goss over the years.

In 1993, Goss formed a partnership with the Shanghai Electric Corporation. This partnership led to a massive international expansion of its manufacturing units and the creation of new types of products. The partnership also brought Goss’ web offset press system to the Chinese market for the first time.

In 2004, Goss acquired parts of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, allowing it to become the world’s largest manufacturer of rotary presses. In June 2010, Shanghai Electric Corporation made a full acquisition, buying 100% of Goss International. The following year, Goss acquired another German company, Vits Print GmbH, which specialized in the manufacture of finishing equipment.

In 2012, Goss made inroads in the French market with the launch of Goss International France, which was the result of a merger between Goss International Montataire SA and Goss Graphic Systems Nantes SAS. The same year, Jochen Meissner was replaced as CEO by American Rick Nichols. The company headquarters is located in Durham, New Hampshire.
