Robert Herjavec was always a go-getter. As a young man in Canada, he persuaded research tool provider Logiquest to give him a job selling IBM mainframe emulation boards, even though he was underqualified. He eventually became its General Manger. After leaving the firm he launched his own company, BRAK Systems, an Internet security software integrator. He later sold it for $30.2 million.
After the sale, Herjavec took three years off to recharge, acting as a stay-at-home dad. He then came up with his next idea -- cybersecurity services and solutions for enterprises. He partnered with two others to launch a company to market these offerings in 2003, called Herjavec Group. It initially sold CheckPoint firewalls, providing the services to some of the most complex networks in the country.
Over the next decade Herjavec Group greatly expanded its capabilities, adding managed security services and acquiring numerous firms to diversify its portfolio. By 2007 it was recognized by prominent lists such as the CDN Top 100. Between 2007 and 2012 it achieved a 643% growth rate in employee size, becoming one of the fastest-growing technology companies in North America.
