IDEO strives to create positive change through design with a human centered approach and core company values such as optimism, collaboration, and taking action.

History

IDEO was founded in 1978 by David Kelley. It was originally named David Kelley Design, and was renamed to IDEO after a merger between the following companies: Moggridge Associates, San Francisco’s ID Two, and Matrix Product Design. Starting as early as October of 2001, the company has invested in nine different companies to date.

The first company IDEO invested in was NanoMuscle, with an undisclosed amount of funding. In the year of 2002 the company made three investments in three different companies, those investments are as follows: $5-million for Arena Solutions, $5-million for NanoMuscle, and $8.4 million for Zinio LLC.

Then in 2010 IDEO supported ShopWell with $1.1 million, and Food Genius with $1.2 million in 2012. In 2013 the company invested in two companies; PillPack with $3.5 million, and Food Genius with $1 million. Finally, in 2015 IDEO made a $1.25 million investment in Catalia Health. In total the company has disclosed $26.45 million in investments for companies and startups.

IDEO focuses on human-centered problem solving to propose solutions for some of the worlds’ most pressing issues. IDEO.org is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit which was created in 2011 to find solutions to reduce poverty in the world.
