Mission

Intercom's mission is to change the way businesses communicate with customers, personally at scale. It's a customer communication platform with a suite of integrated products, enabling targeted communication with customers on websites, in web and mobile apps, by Facebook Messenger, and by email.

History

Have you ever contacted customer service and received a generic reply beginning with “Dear valued customer,…”? Intercom was founded when four Irishmen set out to find a solution to this very problem.

Founded in 2011, Intercom has its origins in chat-style pop-up application that founders Eoghan McCabe, Des Traynor, Ciaran Lee, & David Barrett built for themselves while working together on their first business and product, Exceptional. This company would later be acquired, laying the ground for the launch of Intercom.

Prior to founding Intercom, CEO Eoghan McCabe ran a software design consultancy in Ireland called Contrast, which worked on many successful projects, including Storyful (acquired by NewsCorp), Smartling and FieldAware. He would later co-found Exceptional, a SaaS business. While Exceptional would eventually be acquired, the difficulties he experienced in this business, with communicating with customers, led McCabe to move to San Fransisco in 2011 and work exclusively on a solution to this problem.

Beginning with just over $1 million in seed funding in 2012, Intercom has rapidly expanded its customer base and the number employees. In their Series A round of funding in 2013, Intercom raised $6 million, with the lead investor being Social Capital. This was followed by a Series B round in 2014, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, which raised $23 million.

The Series C round in 2015 brought in an additional $35 million. Intercom underwent their most recent round of funding in April, 2016, raising $50 million in investment. To date, Intercom has received over $115 million in funding. The company and its 250 employees continue to be based in San Francisco. Intercom currently has well over 13,000 paying customers.
