New Relic is a software analytics company that delivers a software-as-a-service product which monitors web and mobile applications. Its software enables companies to collect, store and analyse software data in real time.
New Relic was founded in 2008 by software engineer Lew Cirne (“Cirne”). Having previously founded and sold a successful analytics company, Cirne began looking at more cost-effective ways of scaling businesses without the need for hiring expensive external analytics providers, identifying the software-as-a-service model as the most efficient for this type of venture. Cirne developed this idea and founded the business under the name New Relic, an anagram of his own name.
New Relic began attracting venture capital in 2008, raising more than $204 million by mid-2014. The Company’s investors include big names such as BlackRock, Insight Venture Partners and DAG Ventures. New Relic listed shares on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014, raising a further $115 million in its initial public offering. Following its public listing New Relic was valued at just under $1 billion.
Within eight months of its launch the Company reportedly accounted for around 85% of app performance management using the Ruby on Rails application framework, causing Cirne to expand New Relic’s offerings to cover apps running on Java. The Company now covers a full range of application frameworks.

New Relic is an attractive option for websites and app developers as it provides real-time detailed analytics in an accessible and easy-to-use format.
The Company’s products, which are reasonably priced in comparison to its competitors and are all available for free trial periods, cover a range of services and can be accessed either via the cloud or through software installed on-site.
The cloud delivery of the software enables users to begin monitoring and storing data quickly and autonomously without the need for technical assistance. If, however, assistance is required, the Company provides ongoing customer support.

The Company divides its partners into three categories: Service, Integrate and Sell. New Relic’s most obvious key resources are its analytics software products. While the Company provides a range of proprietary products, it does not have any patent applications registered in its name with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
In addition to its software offerings, New Relic’s key resources are its IT infrastructure and its personnel. The Company’s software development and engineering team and after-sale support team play particularly important roles in New Relic’s operation.
New Relic incurs costs through the development and maintenance of its software products, the retention of its personnel and the maintenance of its IT infrastructure, including payment of server rental and data centre operations.
The Company also operates offices in San Francisco, Portland, Dublin and Barcelona, all of which individually accrue fixed costs relating to utilities and the rental of office space.
New Relic generates revenue through the sale of various products in the form of software-as-a-service. All of its products are priced on a pay-monthly basis.
The Company’s application performance monitoring service comes in a basic Essentials package and a more advanced Pro package, costing $0.10 per hour and $0.20 per hour respectively. This is paid on a monthly basis at the rate of $75 or $149 per month.
New Relic’s mobile, browser and synthetics monitoring services are also priced on a monthly basis but are not divided into basic and advanced offerings. The Company’s mobile analytics service is priced at $999 per month, per app, its browser analytics service is priced at $149 per month, and its synthetic analytics service is priced at $69 per month.
New Relic’s revenue model appears to be successful. In 2015 the Company recorded an annual revenue of $110.4 million in its annual report and was named by Deloitte as one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the US.
info: Lew has served as New Relic’s Chief Executive Officer since founding the Company in 2008. Before founding New Relic, Cirne founded and successfully sold another technology company, applications management solutions provider Wily Technology (“Wily”). He founded Wily in 1998 and held the role of Chief Executive Officer until 2001, when he stepped down to allow an experienced Chief Executive to take the reigns. Cirne assumed the role of Chief Technology Officer. Wily was acquired in 2006 by software company CA Technologies. Cirne stayed on in his role within Wily but left the company in 2007 to pursue other interests. He served briefly as Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Capital before founding New Relic. Cirne is a software engineer by training, beginning his career in this capacity in 1992 at Apple Computers.
