History

Pivotal Software traces its history back to the establishment of Pivotal Labs in 1989 by Rob Mee (“Mee”) Pivotal Labs expanded significantly throughout the 1990s, establishing itself as a market leader in the software development sector, pioneering agile programming. Pivotal Labs was ultimately acquired by EMC Corporation in 2012, and functioned under the name GoPivotal for a brief spell.

Pivotal Software was formed when the Pivotal Labs business was spun off from EMC Corporation and VMWare, which had also invested in the business, in 2013. The Company began quickly attracted investment interest, completing its first round of formal funding in 2013. The Company. To date, has raised more than $!.7 billion in three rounds of funding, including investments from companies such as Microsoft, Ford Motor Company, and EMC Corporation.

Pivotal Software has used a portion of these funds to make several acquisitions, including those of Xtreme Labs, Neo Innovation, Slice of Lime, and CloudCredo. The Company has expanded its operations internationally, operating a network of offices across North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe.

Pivotal Software owns a number of intellectual properties that are key to the success of its ongoing operations. Searches of records published by the US Patent and Trademark Office identified more than 30 patent applications filed in the name of Pivotal Software, including applications entitled ‘Filtering data frames using program instrumentation’, ‘Persistent file system objects for management of databases’, and ‘Finding command and control center computers by communication link tracking’.

Pivotal also owns and leases a number of physical properties, including its network of offices and satellite offices across North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe.

The Company principally derive revenue through the collection of subscription fees in relation to its platform-as-as-service solution. Pivotal Software is not a publicly-listed company, and as such does not publish it financial results on its website. The Company, however, recently announced that its first-quarter 2016 revenue had reached $83 million, up 56% on revenue recorded over the same period in 2015.

Paul Maritz,
Executive Chairman

info: Maritz has served as Executive Chairman at Pivotal Software since co-founding the Company in 2013. He also serves as a director of Mifos Initiative. Maritz began his career in 1981 as a product manager at Intel. He held this role for five years, before joining Microsoft, where he served in a number of roles over a period of 14 years, including a spell as Senior Vice President. In 2003 Maritz was appointed Chief Executive Officer at PI Corporation, where he stayed for five years, ultimately leaving the company in 2008 to join VMware as Chief Executive Officer, his final executive role before joining co-founding Pivotal Software.

Rob Mee,
Chief Executive Officer

info: Mee has served as Chief Executive Officer at Pivotal Software since 2013, when he became a member of the Company’s founding team. He previously founded Pivotal Labs, where he served in a number of senior leadership positions, developing rapid, internet- style software development processes. He ultimately left Pivotal Labs when it was sold to EMC Corporation. Machine Vision International and Sun Microsystems. Cook went on to hold a number of roles at Sun Microsystems, including spells as Vice President of SSA, Vice President of Central Area, Vice President of WW Storage, and Senior Vice President of US. He went on to join Penguin Computing in 2005, serving as Senior Vice President of Sales and Services for one year before joining Greenplum as Chief Executive Officer.
