So if think you’ve got what it takes to create digital products and services that break new ground for some of the biggest brands on the planet, we can’t wait to hear from you. About The Role: At Potato, best in class software development and human-centred design are at the heart of everything we do. We’re a talented bunch of problem solvers who are committed to finding a better way; delivering smarter products that provide more satisfying experiences and more valuable outcomes for our clients and their users. Our clients include Google, Mozilla and the BBC. As a design team, we want to appeal to both the head and the heart. As a designer we expect you to be able to constantly question and reassess both your own work and that of your team to make sure you’re delivering the right kind of experience for the intended audience. We know that designers come in many different flavours and acronyms. We’re looking for someone who has the right mix of design thinking and practical skills, and is comfortable picking the right tools and activities for projects. This role will see you working as part of a friendly, expert team, where everyone is responsible for the user experience of what we design and build. As cross-disciplinary teams, we all share the responsibility for bringing to life the concepts we create together. While pragmatism should always be in the back of your mind, we need people who can both champion their vision, but also be open to discussion while balancing both the practical and the inspirational. About You: Your portfolio should show that you are used to working on projects at all stages: participating in initial sketching brainstorms, meeting with clients, fleshing out creative concepts, crafting the experience across multiple channels and devices, and liaising with our large pool of developers to bring everything to fruition to your own exacting standards. You should have strong soft-skills and be confident presenting in front of clients and colleagues alike while thinking quickly. Whether it’s a rapid design and usability review of an existing app, or taking a project from requirements gathering to polished designs, prototypes and build you should be able to demonstrate clear design thinking and a thorough understanding of design principles, underpinned with evidence wherever possible and appropriate. You should be comfortable working both to clients’ existing design systems and starting completely from scratch on brand new projects with minimal guidance. Required Skills: At least two years of experience in a related field. A portfolio with real world examples of projects you helped launch. Optional Skills: Demonstrate how you influenced live projects through user research. Communicate the rationale behind the design decisions you made for projects in your portfolio. Demonstrate where you were able to use visual design systems and/or brand guidelines across a range of platforms. Written communication is also an essential part of the role and you should be comfortable analysing and communicating content requirements as well as producing well-worded deliverables for clients. Examples of multiple types of deliverables in your portfolio is helpful. Values: Working shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best engineers, coaches and product leads in town, we’ll give you the freedom to manage your own work and trust you to get things done. Want to work from home occasionally? Go for it. Need to unwind with a game of Fornite or some studio dog cuddles? All good. Ultimately, we just want to make sure that you have everything you need to help us create the best products possible. You’ll have many opportunities for growth and learning: collaboration within teams, rotation to different products, experimentation on internal tools as well as involvement in our Potato Talks events, mentorship and conferences. So if think you’ve got what it takes to build digital products and services that break new ground for some of the biggest brands on the planet, we can’t wait to hear from you. About The Role: At Potato, best in class software development and human-centred design are at the heart of everything we do. As part of one of our friendly, supportive, proactive Agile product teams, you’ll be working closely with fellow developers, designers, and other team members. Our teams are self-organising, with the freedom to define their own ways of working. Most of our products are web-based and use Python (and occasionally Node) on the server, most often Django on Google App Engine (sometimes Firebase, AWS, or Azure). We use a mix of relational and non-relational databases, and other cloud services. We aim to strike a balance between leveraging our existing strengths and exploring new tech. While this listing focuses on Python, we try to avoid silos: our developers are encouraged to contribute to any part of a system they’d like to. Your job title within the company will be simply “Developer”. For this role, we’re looking for someone capable of supporting, guiding and empowering teams to produce excellent software, striking the right balance between perfection and delivery. Experience with Google App Engine or Django is a plus, but not mandatory. We’re looking for someone who writes great code, but also enjoys collaborating with other disciplines in the product team to devise creative solutions to the users’ needs. For this role, you must have an appreciation of the full web stack, as well as an appreciation of current trends in both backend and frontend web technologies. Required Skills: Experience building for the web using Python. Experience using Git to manage development in teams. Experience with Google App Engine or a similar PaaS. An understanding of security vulnerabilities and how to prevent them. An understanding of both relational and non-relational databases. Optional Skills: Experience creating secure and well-designed APIs. Experience building for scale: high traffic, big data, large feature sets. Front-end web or native app development skills. Knowledge of testing, QA tools and methodologies. Values: Working shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best developers, designers and product leads in town, we’ll give you the freedom to manage your own work and trust you to get things done. Want to work from home occasionally? Go for it.Need to unwind with a game of pool or your favourite retro video game? All good. Ultimately, we just want to make sure that you have everything you need to help us build the best products possible. You’ll have many opportunities for learning on the job, collaborating with our highly-skilled teams, and every month we host our own Potato Lightning Talks events. Every developer is assigned a Tech Community Lead as a friendly face to check in with and make sure everyone’s happy (our TCLs are experienced developers who are involved in various company operations, based in the same location as the developers they represent).
