Careers at Riot Games

Mission

Riot Game’s mission is to be the most player-focused game company in the world.

History

Riot Games was founded in 2006 by two ambitious game developers, Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill in Los Angeles. The company created its first game, League of Legend, in October 2008 and publicly released the game in October 2009. The game would later grow to become the most played PC game in the world.

At the time when League of Legend was being created, Riot Games obtained initial funding of 7 million dollars form two venture capital firms, Benchmark Capital and FirstMark Capital. The following year in 2009, Riot Games received additional funding of 8 million dollars from FirstMark Capital, Benchmark Capital, and Tencent Holdings, a Chinese-based technology company. In 2011, Tencent Holdings acquired a majority stake in Riot Games for $231,465,000.

Other notable individuals who helped get Riot Games on its feet are Steve Feak, a former lead developer of Defense of the Ancients, an online multiplayer video game and Steve Mescon, also a former lead developer of the DotA-Allstars.com website. Riot Games went on to absorb more valuable personnel from Blizzard Entertainment, an American video game developing and publishing company based in California. In July 2013, Riot Games was ranked fourth on a list of the top 25 technology companies by the Business Insider, a prominent American business and technology news website launched in 2007.

In December 2015, Tencent Holdings acquired the remaining Riot Games equity holdings soon after the Riot Games’ relocation to West Los Angeles. On March 8, 2016, Riot Games acquired Radiant Entertainment, a game studio that develops town-building simulation games and other video games. Riot Games currently has over a 1000 employees and made an estimated 1.6 billion dollars in revenue in 2015.
