Careers at Segment

Mission

Segment is a computer software company which aims to create a simple analytics API that enables customers to collect, track and send data anywhere they need it.

History

The company was founded in 2011 by MIT students Peter Reinhardt, Calvin French-Owen, Ilya Volodarsky, and RISD student Ian Storm Taylor.

They participated in Y Combinator’s summer 2011 program and were originally aimed to create an analytics software to compete with Google Analytics or KISSmetrics. They ended up creating Analytics.js, a library that packed all the analytic services and APIs together, and released an open version of the program on GitHub.

The open source version grew and a couple of months later, they pivoted and created Segment.io, a simple analytics API. With Segment, instead of figuring out which API to use, the developer can simply use an API that works across all providers which only takes a few hours of integration.

The company has raised a total of $44.6 million with  $580,000 of seed capital from New Enterprise Associates, General Catalyst Partners and e.ventures in 2013. This was followed by two series of fundings - a $15 million funding in 2014 led by Accel Partners and another $27 million in 2015 led by Thrive Capital, with existing investors Accel Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Jon Winkelried, former president of Goldman Sachs.

In 2015, the San Francisco based company was named one of the 5 hottest cloud-based marketing startups by Forbes magazine and was included in the 2016 Wealthfront Career Launching Companies list. The software previously only supported a browser JavaScript library, but later launched libraries for Ruby, Node.js, Python, Java and .NET.

It currently supports 20 analytics providers, including those from Google, KISSmetrics, Mixpanel, Chartbeat, as well as enterprise providers HubSpot and Salesforce, that collect and route customer data to over 160 different tools and database services worldwide.
