Mission

To create a platform where people find it very easy to create and sell high-quality products they love and put them on the market, without any risk or cost.

History

Two Brown University students, Walker Williams and Evan Stites-Clayton, wanted to sell t-shirts to commemorate the closing of a local bar by a police raid. People were up in arms and these two wanted to unify the student body with the same t-shirt.

Instead of investing a large amount of money in a bulk volume of shirts, the two students created a website where people who were interested in making their voices heard on the matter could make pre-orders with their size and payment. The payment information was only processed if they had received more than 200 orders. Lo and behold, they sold over 400 t-shirts, processing the buyers’ payment information and successfully completed all the orders. They successfully created a website that sold t-shirts to their community.

After receiving several requests from other organizations asking for a custom campaign, Walker and Evan decided to pursue the concept of a crowd-funded custom apparel. That is when they created Teespring, a Kickstarter for t-shirts, in 2011.

Evan and Walker graduated in 2011 and they worked on the site until April 2012 when they released the first version of the company website. The company generated plenty of buzz at a Demo Day at Y Combinator, the premier accelerator program in the US, in 2013, where they announced to a roomful of investors and members of the press that they raked in $750,000 in revenue in a single month.

In February 2012, the organization received $675,000 in seed funding. In April 2013, the company received $1.2 million in Angel funding. In January 2014, Teespring received $20 million in Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz. In November of that same year, the company received $35 million in Series B funding by Khosla Ventures.

The company now has 4 offices located in San Francisco, Hebron, and London, and Providence. They have shipped well over 19 million products globally. In the year 2014, 1 in 75 Americans purchased something from Teespring.
