MISSION

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (“UNC Chapel Hill”) is a public research university that aims to provide exceptional higher education teaching and to contribute to the development of innovative ideas and solutions in the medical sector, as well offering health services through UNC Health Care System.

FOUNDING STORY

UNC Chapel Hill was first chartered in December 1789, the first public university chartered under the US Constitution.  UNC Chapel Hill is one of three universities that claims to be the oldest public university in the US, and is the only institution to have conferred degrees in in the eighteenth century as a public institution.

During the Civil War, UNC Chapel Hill remain in operation, the North Carolina Governor having persuaded the Confederate President to exempt some students from the draft. 

The university, however, was ultimately forced to close between December 1870 and September 1875, the region having suffered considerable losses. 

UNC Chapel Hill continued to develop socially throughout the early twentieth century, formally desegregating its undergraduate divisions in 1955 and becoming fully coeducational in 1963.

Since the 1990s, UNC Chapel Hill has expanded rapidly, recording a 15% increase in its total student population to more than 28,000 by 2007. 

The Company has also constructed a range of new facilities,  is accompanied by the construction of new facilities, notably including scientific and medical research facilities. 

The university notably oversees the operations of the not-for-profit medical system UNC Health Care System, which was founded in 1998.

UNC Chapel Hill is the flagship pf the 17 campuses belonging to the University of North Carolina.  It is considered a ‘Public Ivy’, offering an Ivy League standard at a public school price.

UNC Health Care System operates a network of hospitals and community clinics in North Carolina, offering a range of inpatient, outpatient, and post-acute services, including cardiovascular programs, diabetes care, lung care, rehabilitation care, spine care, wound management programs, and comprehensive transplantation.

In 2018, UNC Chapel Hill recorded total operating expenses in the amount of USD 3.00 billion. 

UNC Health Care System recorded total operating expenses for 2018 of USD 4.10 billion, including salaries and benefits of USD 2.41 billion, medical and surgical supply costs of USD 832.25 million, and contract services costs of USD 221.94 million.

Revenue Streams

UNC Chapel Hill generates revenue through the operation of an academic institution and medical research operations, including the collection of tuition fees, housing fees, and other campus fees. 

Its related entity, UNC Health Care System generates revenue through the provision of health care services and the collection of medical fees from patients or via managed payors. 

In 2018, UNC Chapel Hill recorded total operating revenues of USD 2.18 billion, including tuition fees of USD 429.40 million, grants and contracts of USD 835.99 million, and sales and service revenue of USD 897.74 million. 

In 2018, UNC Health Care System recorded total net operating revenue of USD 4.25 billion, primarily in the form of patient service fees.

Our team

Kevin M. Guskiewicz,
Interim Chancellor

info: Kevin M. Guskiewicz (“Guskiewicz”) has served as Interim Chancellor at UNC Chapel Hill since February 2019. He is responsible for leading the institution’s executive operations on an interim basis, representing the university externally and overseeing its strategies for development. Guskiewicz has been a member of UNC Chapel Hill’s faculty since 1995. He is the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Exercise and Sport Science, co-director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Centre, and director of the Centre for the Study of Retired Athletes. He also holds appointments in the department of orthopaedics, department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, the UNC Injury Prevention Research Centre, and doctoral program in human movement science. Prior to his appointment as Interim Chancellor, Guskiewicz served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from January 2016.

Robert A. Blouin,
Executive Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer

info: Robert A. Blouin (“Blouin”) serves as Executive Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer at UNC Chapel Hill. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing budget and planning operations and for attracting, developing, and retaining faculty members. He has been with the institution since 2003. Prior to joining UNC Chapel Hill, Blouin was a faculty member and administrator at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy from 1978 to 2003. There, he took on the role of associate dean for research and graduate education in 1997, taking responsibility for overseeing the development and expansion of the Centre for Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology. Blouin continues to engage in research activities in the field of disease and altered physiologic status on the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and metabolism of drugs.

Haywood D. Cochrane,
Chairman of the Board of Trustees

info: Haywood D. Cochrane (“Cochrane”) was appointed Chair of the Board of Trustees at UNC Chapel Hill in July 2017. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the activities of the institution’s executive team, as well as the strategic planning and development operations at the university. Cochrane began his career in the banking sector, later moving into the healthcare sector, where he specialised in rebuilding and developing a number of public and private companies. He has since held numerous executive positions, including spells at companies such as Allied Clinical Laboratories Inc, Roche Biomedical Laboratories Inc, National Health Laboratories Inc, Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings, and CHD Meridian Corporate Healthcare Inc. He has also served as a director of I-trax, Allied Clinical Laboratories Inc, Tripath Imaging Inc, EV3 Inc, and American Esoterics Inc.
