History

Walgreens Boots was formed in its current structure in 2014, after US pharmacy chain Walgreens purchased the remaining 55% interest in Switzerland-based Alliance boots, having previously purchased a 45% stake in the company in 2012, with an option to purchase the remaining shares within three years. The Company now has its roots in several well-known pharmacy chains, notably Walgreens, which dates its history back to 1901, and Boots, which was founded in 1849.

The recently formed Walgreens Boots is one of the largest pharmaceutical retail groups in the world, operating more than 12,000 retail stores across markets in the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The Company additionally operates a wholesale business across Europe. Walgreens boots is ranked 19th on the Fortune 500 list and is placed 107th on the Forbes global 2000 list. It trades apportion of its shares on the NASDAQ, and has a current market capitalisation of $91.17 billion.

Customer Segments

Walgreens Boots makes the bulk of its sales through its physical retail stores. This comprises 8,175 retail outlets across the US and its territories, and a further 4,673 across various jurisdictions outside the US, including a significant presence across the UK and Mexico. The Company operate sits retail stores primarily under the Walgreens and Boots brand names. Walgreens Boots operates a separate wholesale sales organisations, that deals directly with healthcare providers around the world.

Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

He oversees the overall strategic direction of the Company, and is its key decision maker. He has held a number of senior positions at the Company. Pessina was formerly a long-serving employee of Alliance UniChem and its predecessor companies. He was a founder of Alliance Santé in 1977, a Franco-Italian pharmaceutical wholesale group which merged with UniChem. He went on to hold a number of senior positions at Alliance UniChem, serving as a member of its Board of Directors from 1997, before the merger with Boots PLC.

George Fairweather,
Executive Vice President and Global Chief Financial Officer
