History
Whole Foods traces its history back to 1978, when John Mackey (“Mackey”) and Renee Lawson (“Lawson”) borrowed $45,000 from family and friends to open a small natural foods store called in Austin, Texas under the name SaferWay. After being evicted from their apartment for storing food in their home, the couple began living at their newly opened store. Mackey and Lawson went on to partner with Craig Weller and Mark Skiles to merge SaferWay with Clarksville Natural Grocery, which resulted in the establishment of the first Whole Foods-branded store in 1980.
Despite an early setback, with much of the Company’s stock being washed away in a flood in 1981, Whole Foods began to expand its operations. In 1984 the Company opened its first stores outside of Austin, abolishing a presence in Houston and Dallas, followed by New Orleans in 1988. A year later the Company expanded to the West Coast with a store in Palo Alto, California. The Company has also expanded through acquisitions, including those of Food for Thought in Northern California and Harry's Farmers Market stores in Atlanta.
Today, Whole Foods is one of the most popular supermarket chains in the US, and has a growing presence in Canada and the UK. The Company is ranked at 181st on the Fortune 500 list and at 990th on the Forbes Global 2000 list. Whole Foods trades shares on the NASDAQ and has a current market capitalisation of $9.21 billion.

Recent reports suggest that a typical Whole Foods customer is a female between the ages of 25 and 39 with more than $1,000 in discretionary monthly income, typically working in a professional environment.
Whole Foods has recently attempted to diversify its customer base and compete with low-cost grocery chains such as Aldi and Trader Joe’s by launching its own chain of discount outlets. info: Mackey has served as a member of the senior leadership team at Whole Foods since co-founding the Company in 1978. He served initially as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer from 1978 until 2010, when he was joined by Walter Robb (“Robb”) as Co-Chief Executive Officer. Robb, however, is due to step down from this role at the end of 2016, following which Mackey will resume the responsibility of sole Chief Executive Officer, overseeing the Company’s overall strategic direction. Mackey is a noted support of animal rights and libertarianism. He has notably co-authored a book entitled Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business, which was a 2013 New York Times and Wall Street Journal best seller.
