Business intelligence (BI) developers typically work for large companies or other organizations that collect massive amounts of data and need to extract usable information from their databases.

A BI developer creates and manages business intelligence and implements analytics solutions that turn data into useful knowledge.

  • Although producing business intelligence requiresIT skills, the primary function of BI developers is to provide information and analytics, so they areoften located in the communications department of large organizations.
  • The working environment is likely to be fast-paced, sincethe BI developer will likely have to respond to frequent ad hoc requests for information, with a fast turn-around time.
  • BI developers typically work collaboratively with other team members. They each work on their own assigned tasks or projects, but they frequently consult with others on specific conceptual or technical issues.
What do Business Intelligence Developers Do?

Business intelligence (BI) developers are database managers with a high level of technical skill.

Tasks performed by Bi developers typically include:

  • Adapting or developing software tools for creating databases and storing data
  • Translating business needs for informationinto technical specifications for accessing the data
  • Maintaining and supporting data analytics platforms
  • Conducting unit testing and troubleshooting the software
  • Evaluatingall BI systems and keeping them current
  • Developing and maintaining technical documentation for all BI systems and software tools
  • Presenting information through reports and visualizations
  • Designing, developing and using business intelligence solutions for preparing standard reports
  • Developing and executing database queries, conducting analyses, and creating visualizations and reports in response to specific ad hoc requests

To become a business intelligence developer you should possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or relevant field
  • Background in data warehouse design (e.g. dimensional modeling) and data mining
  • In-depth understanding of database management systems, online analytical processing (OLAP) and ETL (Extract, transform, load) framework
  • Knowledge of SQL queries, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Familiarity with business intelligence technologies (e.g. Microsoft Power BI, Oracle BI)
