Auburn is a city located in the eastern half of the state of Alabama. With a population of over 63,000 it is the largest city in the eastern portion of the state.
Auburn is home to Auburn University, making it very much a college town. It is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the US, and was ranked by U.S News as one of the top ten places to live in the United States.
The town is nicknamed the Loveliest Village on the Plains.
Job Market in the Loveliest Village
As a college town, the University is by far the largest single employer. The University itself has a workforce around 4,300 strong, meaning that it accounts for about a quarter of the total workforce in the city. Of course, it should be noted that these jobs do comprise employment opportunities across a wide range of sectors, everything from Human Resources to IT support and even horticulturists, janitorial & security staff and financial support staff.
The service and manufacturing sectors are also strong in this city, providing around 8,500 and 5,000 respectively. Manufacturing centers on high tech industries, with a strong base of tech research firms too.
The Auburn Research Park opened in 2008, a sprawling 156-acre site home to several companies engaged in high tech research.
The town also sits between two major automobile manufacturing plants. The KIA plant is 35 miles away and a Hyundai plant is located about 55 miles to the west. Both are easily accessible from the city, being located on Interstates.
Unemployment stands at 3.9% (2017) lower than both national and state averages.
Living in the Loveliest Village
The city is home to an impressive art gallery, the Jules Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. It is also home to several orchestras and a well appointed theatre with a busy year round schedule.
To take advantage of the Southern weather, the city boasts 16 parks, the largest of which, the Chewacla State Park covers 700 acres. There are ample hiking trails in the hills that surround the city too, making Auburn a very attractive city to those who enjoy an outdoors style of life.
Collegiate sports are huge here, with the usual pre and post game festivals and celebrations, including the fames tradition of tailgating & eating BBQ before the game, will accompany home games for the university team.
