The land of Bayonne was originally home to the Native Americans belonging to the Lenni Lenape tribe. The area was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1600s, a passing Dutch explorer who claimed the land for the Netherlands. Due to his explorative achievements, the Hudson River is named after him.
The Dutch lost their land to the British forces in 1664, and the American Revolution saw the British forfeit their share during the clash at Fort Delancey. The Fort became known as Bayonne. Bayonne started to expand by incorporating nearby villages located at Bergen Point. The township of Bayonne was soon integrated as a city.
Steamboats made their way into Bayonne in 1846 — opening routes of transportation and trade. By 1860, the railroads were set up and many restaurants and resort hotels were established to entertain the tourists making their way into Bayonne. The city was known for its ship-building industries and yachting hubs.
