Beaumont is a city located in the US State of Texas. It is the county seat of Jefferson County.
The city has a population of around 188,000 inhabitants, making it the 24th most populous city in the state.
The city started life trading Lumber, before becoming a major agricultural center growing rice.
The city really boomed however with the discovery of oil. The city is a major center of petro-chemical refining, as well as being a major regional industrial center.
The city is home to several art galleries such as the Art Museum of Southeast Texas and several excellent museums such as Beaumont Children’s museum. There are a number of parks, outdoor recreation facilities and botanical gardens.
Downtown Beaumont is the center of both business and nighttime entertainment. Attractions include the 6,500 seat multi-use Civic Center and the Event Center and Plaza which includes a 12 acre lawn for outdoor concerts.
The annual south Texas state fair attracts more than 500,000 visitors and there is also an annual jazz festival, a film festival and a yearly marathon.
The city is affordable and broadly a friendly place to live. Negatives include a local school system that is average at best, and the high crime rate.

The oil industry is one of the largest employers in town, with around 10% of all jobs in this sector. ExxonMobil for example employ close to 2,000 people, EnGlobal Corporation employs a similar amount.
Lamar University employs over a 1,000 and the two major hospitals in the city employ over 3,000 people between them.
Healthcare, at 14% and education at 11% are therefore large employers. Retail, at 13% and food services at 9% also provide a lot of jobs.
