Jobs in Bend, Oregon, United States
Bend is located in Deschutes County, Oregon. It is the largest city in central Oregon and despite its modest size is the de facto metropolis of the region. Sitting on the edge of the stunning Cascade Range on the banks of the Deschutes River Bend is known for the stunning scenery it enjoys. It is here that the Ponderosa Pine forest transitions into the high desert, the landscape is characterised by arid land, junipers, sagebrush and bitter-brush.
Bend originally grew up around a crossing point on the Deschutes River. While it was originally a logging town Bend is now a hub for many outdoors activities such as fishing, mountain biking, hiking, camping and paragliding.
A Thriving Economy
One of the major pillars of Bend’s economy is the tourism sector. Many people travel here to enjoy what Bend has to offer every year and, subsequently, many jobs in the area rely on the tourism industry. These include tour guides and instructors as well as the employment opportunities in the ever-expanding hotel and hospitality industries.
Bend is also home to the Deschutes Brewery, the 8th largest in the United States. It is also the largest of over a dozen microbreweries in the city. Each year the city hosts many events celebrating its brewing culture including: The Bend Oktoberfest, The Little Woody Barrel Aged Brew and Whiskey Fest, Bend Brewfest, and Central Oregon Beer Week. This is an expanding industry in Bend with more microbreweries opening all the time.
Another growing employment sector in Bend is the healthcare and social service industry. With an increasingly elderly population many healthcare organisations such as the St Charles Medical Centre are expanding. Many other people find work in the related research and administrative industries. Organisations such as Central Oregon Landwatch and Oregon Solutions have also been attracted to the area because of this. Another beneficiary of this influx is the construction industry as people work to accommodate the numbers of people who wish to live in Bend or its surrounding area.
A City To Play As Well As Work
Bend is home to a number of museums and historic places of interest including the High Desert Museum and the Downing Building. The Old Mill District of the city is a popular destination for shopping and dining. Since 2004 Bend has hosted the Bend Film Festival, one of the top indie film festivals in the country.
Thanks to its reputation as an outdoor destination Bend is home to the professional cross country ski team XC Oregon which competes in many international events. Bend also regularly hosts many major sporting events. Recently the USA Cycling Elite Road National Championships and the USA Winter Triathlon National Championships were successfully held here. Meanwhile Bend is also home to the annual Cascade Cycling Classic. With over 480kn of mountain bike trails it is no surprise that Bend was recently named the top mountain bike city in Mountain Bike Action Magazine. Another popular sporting attraction is Bend’s Pole Pedal Paddle, one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier athletic events. It is a relay race held each spring with six legs that include alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, biking, running, canoeing, kayaking and sprinting.
Thanks to its stunning setting Bend enjoys many parks and wildlife reserves including the Deschutes National Forest, Oregon Badlands Wilderness and Mount Bachelor ski area. This has helped Bend become a hub for mountain biking, fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, white water rafting, skiing, paragliding and golf.
That Bend has been able to take advantage of its stunning setting has been a great boost to its economy. Today many people wishing to work in the tourism sector are drawn to Bend. Others opt to live here because of its close proximity to Portland. However unlike Portland Bend enjoys a relatively low cost of living, this has only added to the draw. In 2015 Bend was ranked, by Men’s Journal, as one of the 10 Best Places To Live Now.
