Berwyn is a bustling city in Cook County, Illinois. Growing up around ancient Native American trails Berwyn sits on grassy marshland. Its origin’s owe much to the arrival of the Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1862. Steady growth continued for much of the 19th and 20th century as Berwyn transformed itself into a vibrant city. Meanwhile the Illinois Central Railroad stops at Berwyn as it runs between Chicago and Freeport, Illinois. There is also a regular bus service from Berwyn to its neighbouring suburbs.
The City Of Homes
Berwyn is affectionately known as the “City of Homes”. However it also contains four primary business corridors. This means that there are many employment opportunities in a variety of fields right on your doorstep. One, Ogden Avenue, is focused heavily on the automobile industry with many garages and car dealerships. Ogden Avenue is also a part of the historic Route 66.
Meanwhile the Depot District is a hub for independent businesses, shops and restaurants. It is also a magnet for artisans and local artists. Cermak Road, the third business corridor, has been dubbed “The Bohemian Wall Street”. This is due to the number of finance related businesses that operate here. Cermak Road is also home to the Cermak Plaza Shopping Center, which opened in 1956, is located at the corner of Harlem Avenue and Cermak Road. Current tenants include many household names including Office Depot, Dollar Tree and Party City.
The final business avenue is Roosevelt Road. It is home to many popular music venues including the famous FitzGerald’s Nightclub.
An Art’s Hub
Berwyn is home to a growing artistic community. It is home to a professional theatre, an Arts Council and many music and entertainment venues. Many artists and creative people chose to live in Berwyn, finding it a vibrant and alternative to Chicago.
The Houby Day Parade, which celebrates Berwyn’s large Czech population is held every year. The parade is traditionally timed to coincide with the fall mushroom harvest. Meanwhile on Ogden Avenue, which is part of Route 66, a popular Vintage Car Show takes place annually. Since 2006 Berwyn has also held Cartopia, which attracts car artists from all over the country.
