Shopping & Cultural Hub
There are several large-scale areas devoted to shopping in the city. A downtown development of student housing has led to a boom in recreational facilities in this area of the city, with many bars and restaurants opening up to take advantage of the reinvigorated nightlife, along with a burgeoning arts scene that has had several art galleries open downtown.
Several large box-mall style shopping areas exist on the edges of the city.
The city boasts it’s own orchestra and opera, along with a pair of science museums, a botanic garden, museum of natural history and a museum of technology.
There are several well attended local festivals including one devoted to the Spiedie, a local delicacy of marinated meat served in a sandwich roll (much tastier than it sounds!)

An Economy Emerging from the Cold
The city had long been a center of high tech, often defense oriented research and manufacturing. For example, the company IBM was founded here and for many years the city prospered.
Cuts in defense spending after the end of the Cold War hit the local economy hard however, and the city suffered a period of decline.
Today, the local economy is bouncing back, focusing on healthcare and the education sector – for example Binghamton University is found here, with around 17,000 students enrolled.
High Tech manufacturing and research is still present, but in far lower numbers than its mid 1980’s peak. IBM, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems are just three of the larger companies with a presence still in town and systems integration, flight simulation and printed circuit board manufacture are important industries.
Healthcare at 18% is the largest employer here, followed unsurprisingly by Education Services at 14% of total jobs.
Manufacturing, 7% and Professional, Scientific and Tech services at 6% reflect the high tech companies still in the city.
Public admin – 5% and other public services – 6.5% reflect the city’s importance as county seat and hub of the metropolitan area.
Retail, at 12% and Accommodation and food, 9% are both very strong reflecting an excellent local service industry.
