Bismarck’s origins trace back to the year 1872, and was earlier called “Edwintor”. It was titled after Edwin L. Johnson, a supporter of the transcontinental railway. Later in 1873, the city changed its name in honor of the German chancellor “Otto von Bismarck”. It was renamed to attract German investors to fund the railway system.
Success found its way to Bismarck due to the discovery of gold from the nearby Black Hills in 1874. This promoted settlers to arrive in great numbers to the city promoting economic growth in Bismarck. By 1883, Bismarck was chosen as the capital of North Dakota territory. Much of the primary industries of Bismarck were wheat, oil, coal, gas, and hay production.
