Brighton has gradually become the largest hub of digital companies in United Kingdom. Its proximity to Gatwick International Airport and London has further bolstered its position as technological capital of the country. As a matter of fact, the city has the largest concentration of high tech companies than anywhere else in Great Britain. The number of digital companies has increased by whopping 91% since 2010. These companies also provide employment to almost 8,000 people.

Education is another important business sector in the city. In fact, the city has a student population of 30,000, one of the biggest in England. The city is home to three universities that are Brighton University, University of Essex and Open University. Similarly, there are a number of colleges and schools in the city including City College, BIMM Brighton, Portslade Community College and Plumpton College.

Other notable economic areas in the city include financial services, retail, marketing, advertising and media management. Due to a high number of digital and media companies in the city, Brighton is also referred to as Silicon Beach.
