The Dutch were the first to occupy the lands of present-day Camden, located on the banks of the Delaware River. The Dutch West India Company went on to complete the establishment of Fort Nassau in 1626, which was the very first European settlement in these lands. The Fort was used as a trading center and for storing goods until it was demolished in 1651.
Camden was integrated as a city in 1828 and served as an economic and transportation center for the entire Philadelphia area. The city was named after Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, who was an English lawyer and politician.
