Jobs in Carlsbad, New Mexico, United States
Carlsbad is a city located in Eddy County in the US State of New Mexico. With a population of a little over 26,000 the city is also the county seat.
Located within the Carlsbad-Artesia Micropolitan Statistical Area, the city lies to the very southeast of the state, close to the Mexican border.
Old Tourist Country
The city, and the natural beauty of its surrounds, have been attracting tourists since the 1890’s, when visitors would come on specially discounted railroad tickets.
Today the city is home to no less than four major national parks and forests. Coupled with the usual superb New Mexico climate, and you have a city perfectly set up for those who like the great outdoors, especially hiking.
Within the city itself there is an Art Museum and a reasonable downtown with some restaurants and bars. There are five smaller parks located within the city, eight schools – but no public library, and the city is somewhat remote.

Mining, Petroleum, Tourism
The three main industries in the town are Tourism, Petroleum Production and Potash Mining and supporting industries.
The city lies atop the rich oil and natural gas fields of the Permian Basin, meaning that mineral and oil extraction are big employers in the city.
In addition, the city is a huge hub for the mining of Potash. This potassium rich compound is mainly used as an ingredient in industrial fertilizer, and Carlsbad produces more Potash than any other place in the entire US.
Finally, as detailed above the city is a pretty big tourist destination for the local area, with a number of attractions.
Put that in numerical terms then, of the roughly 12,300 strong workforce employed in the town, the largest sector to work in is, not surprisingly, the mining and mineral/oil extraction sector, which provide over 15% of the total jobs.
Following behind that, retail (12%) and accommodation & food service (6%) are as strong as you would expect in a tourist town.
Healthcare (13%) and education (8%) are strong sectors and, as you would expect in a growing city, construction (8%) is also a pretty strong industry.
