History of Coeur d’Alene

Before the city was coined the name — Coeur d’Alene, an explorer by the name of David Thompson, from the North West Company, began surveying the area in the year 1807. Claims were made by the British and American sides which arose the Oregon boundary dispute. The dispute ended after Britain gave up its rights to land south of the 49th parallel.

“Coeur d’Alene” receives its name from the Native American tribe of the same name. The tribe was called Coeur d’Alene meaning “Heart of an awl” by French traders as the tribe was considered extremely shrewd to trade with.

During the 1890s, there were plenty of settlers coming into the city as the region had become popular for its silver deposits. Thereafter, the Coeur d’Alene Mining District was set up, and miners were tasked to retrieve silver.
