Danville’s first settlement was set up in 1792 and it was initially called “Wynne’s Falls”, named after the first settler. Much of the area was inhabited by the war veterans from the Revolutionary War. A tobacco warehouse was established in 1793 and the town was known as the “World’s Best Tobacco Market”. The arrival of the 19th century brought trade and transportation to Danville through the completion of the canal system.
By 1847, a railroad plan was chartered due to the efforts of “Whitmell Pugh Tunstall” — a Virginia General Assembly member. The railroad was completed in 1856 and it served a major role during the ongoing Civil War for transporting goods and medicine. After the war, Danville began to expand its textile industry by establishing the “Riverside Cotton Mills”.
Presently, Danville is home to a population count of 41,898, according to the census. The city is located 70 miles to the south of Lynchburg and 30 miles west of Martinsville. The total land area of Dansville is 42.9 square miles.
