Sitting on the majestic Des Plaines River the city of Des Plaines, in Cook County Illinois is a vibrant and diverse suburb of Chicago. As well as excellent transport links to the city, O’Hare International Airport is located just to the south of Des Plaines and is a large employer.
Native America tribes initially inhabited the area surrounding Des Plaines. Despite the presence of French explorers and missionaries in the 1600’s the first settlers did not arrive until 1833. Initially settled by German immigrants Des Plaines has since grown to become a diverse community.
Employment Opportunities for High Fliers
Since its inception O’Hare International Airport has had a great influence, both directly and indirectly, on the economy and job opportunities in Des Plaines. While there are many opportunities for work at the airport many other businesses and companies have chosen to locate themselves here because of O’Hare’s presence. Recently China Airlines has chosen to relocate to Des Plaines from Michigan Plaza.
Rivers Casino opened in 2011 on a large site adjacent to the Tri- State Tollway at the northwest corner of Devon Avenue and Des Plaines River Road. It has since become a major employer in the area.
A Home For Diverse Interests
The interlocking tower at Deval Crossing is a popular location for train spotters and transport enthusiasts. Here they can watch trains from the Union Pacific/ Northwest Line, the North Central Service and the Union Pacific Railroad navigate a complex three way junction system.
Famously the 1985 Hit film The Breakfast Club was filmed at the now abandoned Maine North High School in Des Plaines. Despite no longer being in use it is still a popular place of pilgrimage for film fans when they are in the area. Many of the small businesses in the surrounding area try to make use of this connection.
Meanwhile the Methodist Camp Ground, which predates the city, is a popular meeting point. Every summer the site hosts concerts, day camps, picnics and various other recreational activities. In a similar vein the glorious greenery of the Des Plaines Forest Preserve surrounds the Des Plaines River as it envelops the eastern edge of the city.
