The nearest major city is Albuquerque, located around 140 miles to the east.
A Traditional Town
Located an hour from the Zuni Reservation, and 30 minutes from the Navajo Reservation, Gallup is a multicultural community that is keen to honor it’s Native American history – part of this is shown in the annual August parade and Inter-tribal ceremony, which draws visitors from miles around.
In addition to the nearby reservations, the city is also home to a sizeable permanent population of Native Americans – around one third of the population in fact.
The city lies on Route 66, brining some tourism to town. There is a relatively lively downtown with a good selection of restaurants and bars and shopping is plentiful. There are 12 schools, 7 municipal parks and 2 public libraries.
Crime is a serious concern in Gallup however, with the city having the dubious honor of having the highest rates of violent crime in the state, twice as high as nearby Albuquerque and 5 times higher than the national average.
