Garner was first founded in 1847 by a few settlers and was named “Garner’s Station”, which is titled after the founder — H.C. Garner. In 1850, the first plan of establishing the North Carolina Railroad was set up to attract settlers to the town. By 1878, the town had its first post office established and the town was later (1905) shortened to Garner.
Garner was mainly known for its cotton plantations and agriculture, with plenty of cotton gins and general stores set up to distribute the produce to the masses. “Railroad Street” was the primary business district of the town and is now known as “Main Street”. Although telephonic service reached the town in 1912, it wasn’t till 1924 until Garner’s citizens began to utilize these services.
Garner has flourished over the years with exponential population growth and business development.
