Jobs in Greenville, South Carolina, United States

Greenville is the sixth largest city in South Carolina. Originally the home of the Cherokee tribe 1777’s Treaty of Dewitt’s Corner gave the land on which Greenville would later stand to the state of South Carolina. Probably named after General Nathanael Greene, Greenville largely grew up as a summer holiday resort. The arrival of railroads helped to increase visitors to the city. The most important aspect of the economy was the areas many cotton mills. By 1915 the city had been dubbed the “Textile Center of the South.”

In the years following World War II the economy of Greenville grew largely thanks to the arrival of a number of large stores and chains. A further boost came with the growth of Furman University and the arrival of other higher education facilities were also established. Meanwhile Greenville Spartanburg International Airport opened bringing more jobs and helping to further diversify the city’s economy.

A Forward Looking Economy

Formerly based on manufacturing Greenville’s economy has in recent years transformed itself. Today the major textile manufacturing operations have all but gone leaving only a few independent, artisan operations. However favorable wages and tax benefits have led to some businesses returning to the area.

Today Greenville is site for many multinational company’s regional headquarters. These include Michelin and ScanSource. Additionally the International Center for Automotive Research opened in Greenville in 2011. This facility hosts a number of companies in cutting edge research and design as well as the headquarters for Sage Automotive. The presence of these companies, as well as the smaller operations which support and work alongside them, means that there are increasingly well paid, high skilled avenues of employment to be found in Greenville.

Following the closure of the Donaldson Air Force Base the land it vacated was transformed into the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center. This is now home to a Lockheed Martin aircraft and logistics centre. Facilities belonging to 3M and Honeywell are located nearby. Again the presence of these companies has led to the creation of a number of highly skilled jobs as well as many apprenticeships and training opportunities.

An Active Social Scene

Considered to be one of the United States’ best “Arts Small Towns” Greenville is a hub for the artistic community. Greenville, and its surrounding area, is home to a number of local artists who operate independent studios and gallery space here. The majority of this artistic endeavour is located in the Village of West Greenville area. On a larger scale the Metropolitan Arts Council and the Upstate Visual Arts body work to present a regular series of public events. These tend to have a heavy focus on the more visual arts. The most notable regular event is the First Fridays Art Walk. The city is also home to the Greenville County Museum of Art as well as other fine arts galleries and concert venues.

Greenville is known throughout America for its dance scene. The Greenville Lindy Hoppers are a popular society hosting everything from beginner classes and social dances to the Greenville Lindy Exchange. This draws hundreds of swing dancers to the area from across the country. Alternatively Greenville is also home to the Greenville Blues, Carolina Shag Club and Harvest Moon Folk Society who all teach and celebrate different forms of dance.

For many years Greenville has been overlooked in favour of other, larger cities. However a concerted effort to modernise the local economy is beginning to pay off. Today Greenville is increasingly offering well paid career opportunities in a diverse range of sectors. This combined with good transport links, a decent standard of living and lively social scene means that Greenville is becoming an increasingly popular city to live in.
