Post the Treaty of St. Mary’s in 1818, the first resident home in Greenwood area was set up by the Smock Brothers — John B. Smock and Isaac Smock. The city of Greenwood was earlier referred to as “Smocktown” to honor the brothers. In 1825, it was decided to name the city “Greenfield” but due to a similar city named within the vicinity, the settlers decided to go with the current name of Greenwood.
The earliest industry responsible for Greenwood’s growth was the “The Polk Canning Company”. Apart from canning vegetables all over Indiana, the company would later expand into a dairy market. Soon, the interurban electric railway was opened to the public between Indianapolis and the city of Greenwood.
