Gulfport has seen its fair share of changing ownership from one culture to another. Originally, it was the Biloxi Indians that were inhabitants in the area, until the French came along and made it their home. By 1855, it was referred to as “Mississippi City” and was part of the county seat of Harrison County — 1841 to 1902. It wasn’t until 1898, that Gulfport was officially integrated and was founded by William H. Hardy.
