Hackensack is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey with a present population of about 45,000. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Hackensack saw its first European settlers in the mid-17th century, when the Dutch acquired the land in 1665. The English followed soon after and the land was incorporated as New Barbadoes Township in 1693. It was in 1921 that the township was reincorporated as Hackensack, and the city has flourished as an inner suburb of New York City ever since.
