The city of Harrisonburg is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and is located in the central area of Shenandoah Valley. In 1716, Thomas Harrison — a member of English immigrants — laid claim to over 12000 acres in the Shenandoah Valley region, the area of Rocktown was renamed to “Harrisonburg”. Harrison provided over 50-acres of land as a public grant, this area is currently known as “Historic Downton Harrisonburg”.
