In the 1700s, Hickory was inhabited by the Catawba Indians, who then proceeded to sell their land to a German explorer — Henry Weidner. The city of Hickory was founded by Henry Robinson, who was one of Weidner’s relatives. Robinson set up a small log tavern in 1850 and named it “Hickory Tavern”, this tavern went on to become the first establishments of Hickory.
