Hobbs is a city located in Lea County in the US State of New Mexico. It has a population of around 35,000 inhabitants.
Founded in 1907, the city’s motto is “It all happens here,” which may be a tad optimistic.
Hobbs started life as a small homestead at the turn of the century. Nothing much happened until 1927, when oil was discovered. A refinery was constructed the following year, and the population of the town exploded. Oil remains a crucial industry to the town up to this day.
The Soaring Society Of America is based here, along with a race track and a casino. The city is also well supplied with parks and other outdoor recreation facilities, of which there are 8.
There are a wide range of restaurants and bars in town, some grouped in a small downtown commercial district, and others in the conveniently placed Broadmoor Shopping mall, located in the north of the city.

Oil is King in the Job Market
Just as the oil industry initially powered the growth of Hobbs into a city all those years ago, today it continues to sustain the city. The oil industry is by far the largest employer in the city, with around 17% of all the jobs here directly connected to it.
Retail, at 11% and Accommodation and Food at 8% are the next biggest employing industries, and indicative of a town with excellent commercial amenities for all to enjoy.
Construction also thrives here, at 8% of the workforce, whilst healthcare (8%) and Education (7%) are also big employers.
