Indio is a city located in Riverside County in the state of California. With a population of around 88,000 the city has grown rapidly in recent years. The population in the year 2000, for example, was 49,000.
Situated in the Coachella Valley of Southern California, the city lies amidst outstanding natural beauty. This fact, coupled with the unusually high amount of festivals that take place in and around the city make is a major tourist attraction.

With Palm Springs located 23 miles away, Riversdale 77 miles and even eastern Los Angeles about 120 miles from the city, a large percentage of the population are relatively affluent commuters who only live, rather than work, in the city.
The fact that there are a high percentage of commuters, coupled with the fact the main industries here are Tourism, Agriculture and white collar office based jobs results in a pretty city, unmarred by heavy industry and the resulting visual and traditional pollution.
As mentioned above, the city hosts a variety of festivals, mostly centered on the Date Festival/County Fairgrounds that are hired out year round. Everything from Date festivals (there are 2) to 4×4 monster truck rallies through music concerts and rodeos take place here all through the year.
The city has over 20 public parks, open spaces and outdoor recreation spaces all maintained by the city itself, plus multiple golf courses, including one municipal. It is therefore easy to take advantage of the spectacular Southern California weather.

Employment Opportunities in Indio
Lacking any large scale single industry, the largest single employers are all public bodies – County of Riverside (1,350 employees), Desert Sands United School District (1,090), JFK Memorial Hospital (530) and the city of Indio (308).
Tourism and related service industries are huge employers here. Sales, Cleaning, Food and Serving account for around 33% of the available jobs in the city.
Agriculture, once a huge employer in town has tailed of significantly as more and more arable land has been purchased for housing and golf courses. The agricultural sector now accounts for little over 2.5% of the workforce today.
The city chamber of commerce has attempted to diversify the workforce in recent years however, and encouraged company Headquarters and regional offices to be established in town. This has been a big success, with over 15 companies establishing offices in Indio. After this success, Administrative and Management roles have increased to comprise nearly 20% of the job roles in the city.
