Johnson City is a city located in the US State of Tennessee with a population of around 63,000 making it the 9th largest city in the state.
The city straddles three separate counties, however the bulk of it lies in Washington County.
Cheap Living in Nice Scenery
Forbes ranked the city 14th best in the country for business and careers, and the financial magazine Kiplinger included Johnson City in its list of 10 least expensive cities, citing the amount of affordable homes plus the lower than average costs of transportation, utility bills and health care.
The city boasts amazing skylines, being surrounded by the steep hills and majestic mountains of the Appalachian mountain range. There are a number of excellent city parks, including one in the foothills of the adjacent Buffalo Mountain. Trails for hiking and mountain biking criss-cross the city limits and mountain ranges, and the Nolichucky River, 10 miles to the south provides excellent white water rafting.
Shopping and recreation are good here, as the city is something of a regional hub drawing in people from surrounding areas to shop and eat. The city boasts one large (500,000 square foot) covered mall, as well as a popular downtown shopping district and several open-air retail facilities scattered around town.

Health Dominates the Workforce
The healthcare sector is by far the largest employer, with around 20% of all jobs found in this sector. Mountain States Heath Alliance (3,500 workforce) is the largest single employer, with James Quillen Medical Center employing over 1,400.
East Tennessee State University have around 16,000 students on their campus here and around 2,000 staff. Added to the local school district, education comprises about 14% of the jobs here.
Retail (14%) and food services (11%) are big employers, driven by the city being a commercial hub for the wider area plus the high percentage of students resident here.
Manufacturing is also strong (9%) with many small to medium industrial facilities and a few large scale ones, such the American Water Heater Company which has a workforce of around 1,200.
Admin (5%), Construction (4.5%) and public services (7%) are the next biggest sectors.
