Keller began as a settlement near “Double Springs” in 1845, it was inhabited by Missouri immigrants who began to make their homes close to the Big Bear Creek. The city receives its name from a railroad foreman — John C. Keller, who was with the Texas Pacific Railroad. Keller was a wooded region with plenty of green pastures for raising cattle and fresh water for sustained farming.
The railroad service began to grow Keller at a rapid pace and it was soon a prominent trade center. The first office was built in 1886 and the community appointed John H. Wallace as the postmaster.
