Killeen is a city located in the US state of Texas. Located in Bell County, the city has a population of around 127,000 inhabitants, making it the 21st most populous city in the state.
Military Boom Town
The fortunes of the town are inextricably linked to the nearby Fort Hood army base. The soldiers stationed there, and their families, use the services of Killeen extensively, and so are an extremely important part of the local economy.
The base is currently one of the US army’s largest, with around 55,000 military personnel stationed on it – this in turn has helped Killeen to grow.
The city itself is pretty quiet and residential, with a good local school system. The city is home to a theatre and a number of excellent parks.
There is a large mall, Killeen Mall, as well as downtown-shopping district well supplied with stores, bars and restaurants.

Service Based Industries
There is a little large-scale industry in the city itself. Instead, many people work as civilian employees at Fort Hood, and yet more businesses operate to provide services of all kinds to the soldiers and their families stationed on the base.
Retail, at 13% is therefore the biggest employing sector, with accommodation and food related jobs close behind at 10%.
Healthcare, at 12% and education, at 9% are big sectors – most of those jobs being in one of the three large-scale medical centers and off course within the local education system.
Barely 3% of all jobs are based around manufacturing, highlighting just how entrenched in service the local economy is.
