Lancaster is a city in Ohio’s Fairfield County, some 30 minutes from Columbus near the Hocking River. Established in 1800, the city is extremely rich in history. The city has been holding the Fairfield County Fair since 1850 making it the oldest county fair in the country.
Many prominent historic figures such as famous Civil War general, William Tecumseh, called Lancaster their home. Other important landmarks in the city include a campus of Ohio University, Ohio Glass Museum, the historical Lancaster Camp Ground and Decorative Arts Center of Ohio.
A Glass City
Traditionally, glass manufacturing has been the backbone of Lancaster’s economy. It has been driving Lancaster’s economy since the early days of the city. Currently, majority of Lancaster’s workforce is employed in different glass companies spread throughout the city and surrounding areas. Most important of these companies are Hocking Glass, Anchor Hocking Company, Lancaster Glass Corporation and Ohio Glass Museum.
A Strong Tourism Industry
Another industry which leads the job market in the city is tourism. The city offers many world class attractions, resulting in an increasing number of tourists visiting the area. In fact, tourism is an integral component of the Lancaster’s and Fairfield’s economy and accounts for 8% of total jobs in the area. Employment in tourism industry is growing by just over 2% which is higher than overall employment rate in the state of Ohio.
A Big Center of Agriculture
Fairfield County and the city of Lancaster are also renowned around the country for agricultural, especially beef cattle, dairy and swine farms. There are thousands of these farms in the region, making it one of the largest farm cities in the United States. These farms supply agricultural products to all parts of the country and abroad, pumping millions of dollars to the city’s economy.
A large number of people also make short commune to nearby Columbus daily to work. Lancaster is a small city where everything is available within walking distance. The city offers a small town appeal and it is very cheap in terms of housing. The schools are excellent and there are a lot of recreational opportunities as well.
