In the early 19th century, the area of Laurel was just a congregation of small mills and was the site of several Native American camps. On April 4th of 1870, Governor Oden Bowie signed an act to induct Laurel as a town and thus, development of industries began to occur in the new-found town.

By 1890, the Maryland Legislature passed another act that divided Laurel into three distinct wards. Road pavement projects and electric power plants were set up in the same year. The Laurel Shopping Center was opened in 1958 and several commercial stalls were set up to boost the city’s booming retail industry.

Laurel continues to grow with new restaurants and establishments developing in the locality and with it, the borders of Laurel expanded to the Wellington Development. The Laurel Museum was inaugurated on May 1996 and remains open to the public to this day.

With numerous historic sites located in Laurel, it’s no wonder the city is thronged by tourists throughout the year. The Avondale Mill is part of the National Register of Historic Places and a landmark structure in the city, the mill was destroyed in 1991 due to a fire breakout, and the location is now used as a community park. Duvall Bridge is another point of interest as it is one of the only two constructed truss bridges.

For a day of leisure, head out to the Granville Gude Park and Lakehouse and experience a blissful boat ride amongst the midst of nature. There are hiking trails for adventure seekers located in the area. To survey historic ruins and wetlands, the Riverfront Park is a perfect getaway with amenities like restrooms and a children’s park available.

Experience an open-air concert or plan a lavish wedding at the Montpelier Manson that is famous for its luncheons, candlelight dinners, and group tours. The Dinosaur Park is a perfect family outing to behold pre-historic exhibits and gardens with picnic areas.

The Fire Engine Department is open to potential fire officers looking to join the squad of firefighting personnel.
