Los Angeles, the City of Angels in Spanish, is a large city located in southern California. It is one of the most famous cities in the world, due largely to its long connection to the entertainment industry – particularly the film industry.
Just the name Los Angeles will likely conjure images of palm tree lined beach fronts, baking sunshine and beautiful people – plus of course the iconic Hollywood sign itself.
However, there is much more to Los Angeles than this. In fact, if you bear in mind that the city contains some 4 million residents, it should come as no surprise that this city contains a wealth of diversity far beyond the polished Hollywood image portrayed on the big screen.
Los Angeles is in fact a global city in every sense of that term, but it is also a n economic powerhouse both within the United States itself and further out into the world. The city had a GDP of $789 billion in 2016, making it one of the wealthiest cities on the planet.
This incredible wealth translates into a particularly vibrant economy with high employment spread across a range of industries. For example, the technology sector alone has seen rapid growth over the past couple of decades now employs some 368,000 people in Los Angeles and the surrounding Los Angeles County.
The entertainment industry is also a huge employer in this area with three major film studios located within LA, not to mention independent studios and support services. This sector is in fact currently experiencing something of a surge with a 6.5% growth in employment sector jobs recorded by LA County in 2016.
Finance is also a huge industry in Los Angeles, with a number of major banks boasting large scale operations in the Downtown Financial District. Just this year (2017) in fact, the Global Financial Centers Index ranked Los Angeles as having the 19th most competitive financial center in the world, and the 6th most competitive within the United States.

Of course, it’s not all work in Los Angeles! The city is also an incredible place to live with breathtaking scenery near by, including miles of beaches and pristine pacific waters to help its residents keep cool in a climate best described as Mediterranean.
Movies and the performing arts form a huge part of the identity of Los Angeles, and if you enjoy the theater you will extremely well placed in this city, which boasts over a 1,000 annual theatrical productions.
There are also over 800 Museums and Art Galleries in the LA County area, along with several major music halls plus professional sports teams in every major American sport, meaning that all cultural interests are well served.
Is LA Safe?
Finally, whilst LA does have a reputation of something of a crime ridden city, crime is actually falling year on year with significant declines in the last decade or so, meaning that whilst LA may not be the safest city in America, it is far from the most dangerous.
Los Angeles provides a wealth of employment opportunities, along with a very high standard of living – particularly in it’s provision of recreational, leisure and cultural pursuits. Add to that a climate that provides weeks of unbroken, glorious sunshine and it’s easy to see why this is one of the most popular cities to live and work in.
